The friends of the Trails is a non-profit organization working to preserve open space and create a network of trails, bikeways and greenways in Manatee County.

We are a new organization and our goals are to work cooperatively with state and local governments, community organizations, businesses, families and individuals who share the vision of an interconnected network of trails, greenways and open space. We will do this through education, grant funding, advocacy and volunteer programs.

New trails, parks and open space trails plans have been created by Manatee County for our local communities which provide acquisition, development and use strategies. Our role as a nonprofit group is to assist in the implementation of these master trail plans.

Our Mission Statement:

Our mission is to preserve open space and create a network of trails, bikeways and greenways in Manatee County. We  promote advocacy, assist the County government in the implementation of their open space master plans. Build, encourage and coordinate grass-roots support for open space and trails and help raise private and public funds for trails.

To promote use of greenways for recreation, environmental education and alternatives means of transportation,

  • To educate the public how greenways in our communities can improve our quality of life, increase property values and spur economic development
  • To preserve open space and create a network of trails, bikeways and greenways in Manatee County
  • To support planning, development and implementation of trails from the Manatee County Master Greenways Plan, which was created by the Manatee County Government and Citizens Trail Committee with assistance from the National Park Service.
  • To support historic preservation, environmental protection and education and other sustainable community elements in their scope of design.

Our initial focus is on Gateway Greenways and Willow-Ellenton Rails to trails in Manatee County and as volunteers join our organization we can spread our efforts across all facets of Open Space in Manatee County.

We are looking for volunteers to assist us in our goals. We are planning a series of educational presentations for community organizations and businesses interested in trails. We hope to get some local funds from these efforts and make everyone aware of our existence in Manatee County.
